At the heart of our organisation are the passionate, dedicated individuals that make up our teams. Without them, we would not be able to deliver the quality mental health care and support that we do on a day-to-day basis.
Our staff spotlight series celebrates the people who bring our mission to life, by sharing their stories, work, motivations, and the journey that led them to work in mental health.
In this edition, we talked to Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor, Katie Chadwick, to learn more about what inspired her to join the field, what she has learned along the way, and what continues to drive her commitment to mental wellbeing.
What first drew you to the field of mental health -was there a particular moment or experience?
“I have always had a strong passion for health and wellbeing. Initially I was drawn to physical health, understanding how the body works, how to keep it strong and how lifestyles choices can influence overall wellness.
However, as I learned more and gained experience through various health and wellbeing settings, I started to notice how powerful the impact of mental health was on a person’s quality of life. This led me to want to better understand and support people in their journeys.
While my passion for health has always been there, it has naturally evolved into a deeper interest into mental health. This is where I can feel I make the most meaningful difference.”
What was your own journey to get to the role that you're currently in?
“I began my career in mental health in 2018, working as a Mental Health Support Worker at the Yorkshire Centre for Eating Disorders.
Over the course of five years, I have gained a wealth of experience and developed a wide range of skills in supporting individuals in their recovery. However, in 2022 a new opportunity came up to join Northpoint as a Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor and that marked the beginning of my journey here.”
How do you take care of your own mental health, while supporting others with theirs?
“One of the main ways I take care of my mental health and wellbeing is by regularly engaging in a hobby. For me, that’s CrossFit.
I attend classes six times a week, and although it can be both mentally and physically challenging, it is something I genuinely enjoy. It provides a strong sense of community, a healthy stress release and a fun and active way to stay grounded and active.”
How do you build trust in clients?
“I build trust by being transparent and honest. I communicate in an open and clear manner, which can help clients to feel respected, safe, and establish clear expectations. This can help clients feel comfortable to share more about their thoughts and feelings.”
What do you find most fulfilling about your work?
“It is knowing that, even on the most challenging days, I have contributed in some small but meaningful way to someone’s mental health journey.”
Everyone’s journey into mental health is unique. If you have been inspired or relate to Katie’s story, we would love to hear your own experiences or reflections at @northpointmh.bsky.social.
