New Head of HR – Mandy Bowers

We’re very pleased to welcome Mandy Bowers to our Senior Management Team. Mandy started in June as our Head of Human Resources – a new post for Northpoint and a reflection of our rapid growth and expansion over the last few years. Mandy is an experienced HR leader and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). She joins us with a wealth of experience in the private sector, and a passion for enabling people to see, unlock and achieve their potential. She also has a keen interest in adding value to her local community, and is a PRU governor and chair of a local scout group. In her spare time, Mandy enjoys photography, reading and walking – preferably in the Lake District, her spiritual home.

Stakeholder Survey 2022: Have your say on Northpoint’s goals and ambitions for the future!

Northpoint is asking our key stakeholders, staff, service users and people who live in the areas where we work to have your say on our new organisational strategy. We are currently working on this to guide our services for the next 3 years, 2023–26.

What is a strategy, and what’s in it?
Every 3 years, we put together our plan for the future. This includes looking at what we are doing now, as well as our purpose and our values, which underpin everything we do. We also identify the key impacts we want to make and how we will achieve them. Together, these elements make up our strategy.

Why are you asking me?
We want to ensure that our plans are based on what our service users, staff, delivery partners and communities want and need from us as an organisation. So we would really appreciate it if you could complete the survey and tell us what you think.

How long is the survey, and when and how do I need to complete it?
The survey will ask you a few short questions. It should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete, and will be open until midnight on Sunday 31 July, so you can complete it any time before then. It is a simple online survey, accessed via the link below.

What will you do with my responses?
The survey is anonymous, so we won’t be able to see who has said what. Once we have everyone’s responses, we will sort all the answers and a team of staff within Northpoint will look at these and use them to help formulate our goals.

Can I see the new strategy?
Yes, you will be able to see it on our website from February 2023.

New CEO for Northpoint Wellbeing

We are delighted to welcome Duncan Pearse as our new CEO at Northpoint Wellbeing, who starts his new role on 28 March. Duncan is an experienced Chief Executive who has worked across the public, private and voluntary sectors. Since 2019, Duncan has been Chief Executive Officer of Endeavour Training Ltd, based in Sheffield. Prior to this, he was Chief Executive Officer at Flying Futures CIC, Director of National Citizen Service and Employability (Catch22), and National Programmes Lead at Catch22.

Duncan says: “I am very much looking forward to joining Northpoint Wellbeing and contributing to the great work that it does. Now, more than ever, people need the services that we deliver, and I am committed to ensuring we continue to deliver high quality services in the communities we serve.”

At the same time we say goodbye to Jon Davis, our current Director. Jon joined the organisation in 2005 when it was then Leeds Counselling, and has overseen its development into its current status as a significant provider of mental health services in Leeds and across Yorkshire. He has been a key contributor to the development of new and innovative services, particularly in primary care settings, and has been a powerful advocate for accessible and effective services. He will be much missed – and we wish him well in all his future endeavours.

Community Connectors

Northpoint have been successful in a bid for new work to deliver ‘Community Connector’ roles within LMSP/TLS PCN in Leeds. These new roles are an integral part of the Leeds Community Mental Health Transformation and will not only work with people in communities but also help shape and influence the transformation. We are pleased to have been chosen alongside Barca and Touchstone who will deliver the roles in the two other trailblazer areas, and we will be working in close partnership with them on this work.

As above, we have also been successful in a proposal to become a partner in MindMate SPA delivery in Leeds. This will see us recruiting to 6 posts – 3 x Mental Health Triage Workers and 3 x Neuro-developmental Triage Workers.

Following a proposal to commissioners, we will also shortly be recruiting to a brand-new service area, providing a ‘Therapeutic Community’ in Leeds, focusing on 16–25-year-olds who have experienced trauma. This will be a pilot project for 18 months initially.

Good news for the Healthy Minds Service

Northpoint Wellbeing has been successfully delivering our Healthy Minds service to Chapeltown Primary Care Network(PCN) for several years. On the back of this success, we have recently been approached by several other PCNs looking to commission a similar Healthy Minds model for their own populations. Following a number of meetings to discuss their specific needs, we are pleased to confirm that Northpoint has been given the go-ahead to deliver two new Healthy Minds contracts for the following PCNs:

  • Beeston; Middleton; Hunslet
  • Woodsley and Holt Park.

In total, we will be employing an additional 5.0wte Mental Health Practitioner (AfC Band 5) staff across these two contracts and hope to start delivery in September/October.  We are advertising again on NHS Jobs, so if you, or anyone you know, might be interested in joining us please spread the news.

Scholarships launched to support a more diverse psychological therapies workforce

Leeds Beckett University has partnered with local mental health charity, Northpoint Wellbeing, to support Black, Asian and other people of colour who are traditionally under-represented in the counselling and mental health professions.

The partnership will help candidates to become qualified therapeutic counsellors by offering a number of fee scholarships for the MA Integrative Counselling course.

In addition, Northpoint will provide additional mentorship for scholarship-holders to help with completion of the course and provide Student Membership of the Black African and Asian Therapy Network.

Maryam Riaz, Leeds Beckett University Lecturer for Counselling and Mental Health courses, said: “My personal experience of being the only person of colour as a trainee counsellor and subsequently working as a BAME practising counsellor highlighted the lack of qualified practising counsellors in the counselling and psychotherapy profession.”

“My journey has shown that lack of representation can be a barrier for people of a BAME background to access and gain the appropriate mental health support they need. Not accessing these services adds to disparities in the quality of counselling and psychotherapy care BAME communities receive. Therefore, this Northpoint partnership is timely and vital to provide opportunities for Black, Asian and other people of colour to train as practising therapeutic counsellor.”

“This opportunity brings hope and inspires to bridge the gap of inequality in counselling and psychotherapy services. I have faith this innovative project will develop the counselling and mental health care services for BAME communities and inspire a new generation of practising therapeutic counsellors.”

Andy Ward, Senior Operations Manager at Northpoint Wellbeing Limited said: “Northpoint wishes to encourage a more diverse therapy workforce and we are aware of challenges that Black, Asian and other people of colour can face accessing training to become qualified practising therapeutic counsellors and as such remain traditionally under-represented in the counselling and mental health professions.

“Northpoint acknowledges there are various ways in which diversity can be widened, and that this scholarship offered jointly with Leeds Beckett University is just one small way in which we are trying to redress the balance and are committed to doing so in a number of other areas in consultation with our employees and other stakeholders.”

Increased support for school children in Calderdale

Last year Northpoint was successful in its bid to run a Mental Health Support Team (MHST) to complement its existing children’s services in Calderdale.  We began recruiting during the summer. The team are now all in place and work is well underway.

The MHST provides evidence-based mental health support for children and young people, as well as, support and training to schools to develop their whole-school approach to emotional wellbeing.

The team works with school-aged children and young people experiencing mild to moderate emotional/mental health problems. Referrals are made by trained members of school staff who act as wellbeing leads. They refer directly to Education Mental Health Team practitioners who are based within school. The service has been commissioned by the Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group which receives funding from NHS England and the Department of Education.

The team will provide direct, ongoing support to schools around mental health and wellbeing. This will include:

  • providing direct interventions to pupils with mild to moderate mental health conditions, such as anxiety, low mood or behavioural difficulties.
  • where young people require specialist support, making onward referrals for pupils to local services, such as child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).
  • providing training, education and advice to school staff to help them better support their pupils around mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • championing mental wellbeing and resilience across the whole school community, providing guidance around issues such as bullying and coping with exam stress.

The MHST programme is part of the Government’s plans for expanding access to mental health care for children and young people, following consultation on its Green Paper Transforming children and young people’s mental health.
